Hey y’all! So I am writing this post basically because I was inspired by one of my pastor’s sermons from a few weeks back(well I am inspired every week but this message especially). I really grasped it and told myself that this year I am applying these specific fundamentals. Also Pastor Henry said that the majority of the congregation forgets most of the sermon by the end of the week and I was like… dang yeah he’s right. SO I told myself that I am not going to forget anymore because that would be a waste of valuable information that has and will continue changing lives. Ok yes the title of this is a rhetorical question because we all know that no one can change their past. BUT everyone has the ability to guide their future. Which involves accepting your past and realizing that you can’t do anything about it. It honestly doesn’t matter what you’ve done, who you’ve done it with, or what kind of problems you caused because those facts will never change. Might as well not stress about them right? Because life is still moving forward even if you’re not. From this minute on, you can decide the direction of your life and you can decide whether or not you will stop letting your past mistakes determine your future. That’s one good thing about life that we can all be grateful for! Free will! You have complete control of your body and mind and you can direct it any way you want to(but you’ll need some self disipline.) So allow me to let you in on some things that I’ve learned that will for sure help you move forward in life if you apply them. It will never be easy for you to transition into greatness especially if you have had a completely different mindset for so long. And to make a better future for yourself it first takes a decision and then a whole lot of perseverance. And I’m not saying perseverance on a light note.. I am saying that you are gonna need to push through bad feelings and walk through temptations you’ve never experienced before but hold on to the hope you have. And if you don’t have hope right now.. keep reading this post for some. Do something that future you will be forever grateful for.
Accepting your past and forgiving yourself. Forgiveness is so crucial in like every situation but especially in establishing a future for yourself. Holding a grudge against yourself limits you so much, whether you see it or not. It will hold you back from pursuing your dreams because you won’t believe in yourself. It will stop you from pursing friendships or any type of relationships because you’ll feel as if they deserve better than you. Overall holding a grudge against yourself will always bring you to think that you aren’t good enough. Let me just say from experience that forgiving yourself and learning to love yourself is not an easy concept. It is a long, difficult process and you have to start by committing to the change. Commit to yourself. Promise yourself that you will succeed. Desire the change so much that nothing can take it away from you. Then always rely on the Lord for your strength because you will not be able to do it on your own. Honestly if you don’t have a strong relationship with God then ask for help from a mentor! It is okay to reach out and ask for guidance. It is not weak to ask for help no matter what age you are, in fact it reflects a strong character. Also if anyone needs someone to talk to or if you’re looking for advice from someone – y’all can talk to me if you want! Doesn’t matter if we barely know eachother I am all ears and I also will keep things confidential. Everyone should have a person they can bring any problem to and if I can be that person for you then message me! Anyways back to my point! Learn from other people’s mistakes. For reals though.. learning from other people’s experience can save you a lot. Do not depend on your own experience as your sole teacher – my pastor said that and I feel like everyone needs to hear it. Take advice from other mature believers. Be humble enough to accept correction and stop letting your insecurities control your decisions. Let me just say that if I would’ve listened to the advice from my mentors… in all honesty it would have saved me so much heartbreak. But again I forgave myself many times for making mistakes and falling back and now I am stronger because of it! I feel as if forgiving yourself plus learning to love yourself is the hardest part in this whole “establishing a future for yourself” process. Especially when you’ve let yourself down so much and feel as if you aren’t lovable. But whoever you are don’t forget that you are loved and valued by the creator of the universe.
Deciding what you want in life! Who you want to be is a big part of this. But before you decide let me first say – don’t strive to be like someone else. You are uniquely created and a constant effort to be someone else will only hurt your self-esteem. On another side note, finding out who you are and what you want really helps you discover what you want to do in life career wise. I’ve struggled with deciding what career choice to take in life but honestly as I continuously put God first, I’m slowing finding out who I am and who I want to be. Ok so I’m gonna share two scriptures that I put my faith into everyday because even though I am figuring out the specifics of what I want in life, one thing I am sure of is that I want the plan God created for me. SO when I start freaking out about my future or when I’m not sure if I’m on the right path I fill my thoughts with the truth instead of fear.“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 Ok and this one “Now all glory to God, who is able through his power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20. Ok put this in perspective because maybe you don’t believe the bible. But for those who have Jesus as their savior and believe the bible is true those scriptures are so reassuring. He is straight up telling you that you can have the future you desire. He already knows what is going to happen even if you have no clue. How much more assurance could you need? Put Him before everything else in your life and your future is literally set. I’ve come across people who think putting God first is boring or unnecessary but it is one of the best decisions you could ever make. Ok so God has a plan for me does that mean I do nothing and just keep saying He’s got it? Not really. It means go and work hard for what you want and because you have Jesus, you will have favor in all aspects of your life. You will have opportunities that others will never get, doors will open when you feel like there is no place to go. “…God, who gives life to the dead and calls in being that which does not exist.” It is actually super cool to put faith into a plan that the King destined for you. Even if things don’t work out the way you expect – something great is still coming and you can be sure of that. Off of the promises that Jesus has given, I have hope for my entire future. Even though sometimes I don’t know where to go or what to do I always have peace that the one I am following knows all things and He will always guide me into greatness.
Throw away your doubt and plant faith instead. Exercise your faith. God can provide for every single one of your needs but if you don’t have faith, you can’t access the help He is willing to provide. He gave you His word and He needs you to believe it so that he can pour out all He has for you. Faith isn’t just something you get automatically. Like you aren’t going to read one scripture one time and have this great faith and you aren’t just going to say the salvation prayer one time and have complete faith in Him. It takes time and it also takes effort. Faith doesn’t rely on circumstance but faith is the thing that keeps you going through the impossible situations. It’s weird because I’ve been making an effort to grow my faith in the Word a lot more often and it does something to your physical senses. For example in situations where I would usually be anxious, my new feeling is tthis overwhelming peace. And this sounds weird but I don’t try to have peace.. but the fact that I fill my thoughts and just my whole life with the Word, my entire body relaxes. Even if I want to worry about something I can’t simply because I actually know God. He has no plans of harm and when destruction comes my way I know it isn’t from Him but I know that I know that I will have Him to bring me through it. So honesty my point is here that if you want things to be different then change your thinking. And filling your thoughts with the things of God will absolutely change your life and change your entire perspective. This truly is just a fact and my life is a testimony of this. Simple as this, filling your mind with doubt and fear and your life will reflect that. On the other hand, fill your head with the Word and you will be transformed in a supernatural way. “Finally believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s Word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them and implant them in your heart.]” Philippians 4:8 AMP
Keep Jesus as your joy. Nothing in this world will satisfy us the way Jesus does. I know from experience because I’ve tried things that the world finds satisfying and all of it is temporary. Some things will make you feel good and make you feel happy temporarily but after you come down from that high(whether literal or symbolic) you’re still going to feel empty inside unless you have Jesus. I think about this scripture a lot when I feel as if I start relying on anything that isn’t God : “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but what is unseen, since what we see is temporary but what is unseen is eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 That scripture just speaks for itself and every time I read it my mind gets put in its right place. The world and life in general is so messy, plus it’s so easy to get sucked into. But honestly just taking one second to remember Jesus makes every problem feel small. Walking with Him throughout your whole day puts things into a whole different perspective. I can’t stress this enough but a relationship with Jesus is something you can’t completely understand until you’ve had one and truly once you have one, you will never want to live any other way.
I just want to end this with a reminder and I don’t even know if anyone reads my blog til the end but if you do, I love you! So I decided to write about guiding your future and all this stuff because it is something so difficult and especially difficult to start in the first place. But seriously crucial for life and I think about the points that I shared every single day. That doesn’t mean I apply them all of the time but I really try my best to. Some days I get stuck on my past and by past that can mean even the past couple days and sometimes I stress about something I did years ago! But I have somewhat enough self discipline to stop myself from trailing down a rabbit hole of shame and regret. So my point is, I slip up(if that isn’t already obvious), but there is a difference between slipping up and giving up. I will never give up on myself and I will never give up the plans that God has for me. And that is one of the best decisions you can make. So in conclusion, keep God’s word in you because He is the one getting you through. Keep yourself in check and if you need someone else to keep you in check then reach out to someone!
